"Now, Alice," he says, his voice firm but gentle, "I want you to read this book." Alice swallows hard, her eyes darting between the cover of the book and her stepdaddy's face. She knows she should obey him, but something about this whole situation makes her uncomfortable.
David steps closer, his body language exuding confidence and dominance. He reaches out and runs his fingers through Alice's long, brown hair, tugging gently. "You know you need to do your own hair more often if you want it looking like this."
